Time flies fast, especially in technology world. It’s been some time, since the release of Microsoft’s cloud platform. We know Microsoft’s cloud under the name of Microsoft Azure. However, it’s not always been like this.
Going back in time, the cloud journey at Microsoft has been started under the “Project Red Dog” code name. It was first released in October 2008. Back then, the name was Windows Azure and it has looked quite different, from what we know it now. The name of Microsoft Azure was firstly announced on 25th of March 2014, and it remains till now.
Today, it is huge platform including over hundred various services, enabling to build your solutions. It covers services dedicated to databases, big data, machine learning, security and plenty more. It grows rapidly and currently its datacenters are present across 140 countries.

- In 2021 Microsoft opened first sustainable datacenter in Sweden.
- 165k miles of lit fiber optic and undersea cable systems.

- Microsoft Azure has over 60 regions available.

- In 2014 Microsoft released first Azure Government region in US Gov Virginia.
